Don't Lose Heat through Your Windows
If your windows leave you feeling chilly when the temperature drops, it might be time to consider replacing them with newer, insulated versions. However, if new windows aren't in your budget, you can prevent heat loss through your windows with these tips.
Hang insulating drapes
Heavy drapes can help you prevent heat loss through single-glazed windows. Keep the drapes drawn at all times if you don't get a lot of sunlight through the window, but open them up if you do get a few hours of direct sunlight, as the sunlight can also add heat to the room.
If you don't have heavy drapes, hang a quilt or blanket over the window to provide the same benefits.
Look for cracks
If your windows seem drafty, look around the edge of the window for small cracks that could be letting cold air in. Simply caulking around the edge of the window can improve their energy efficiency and help to keep your home warmer.
Insulate your windows
There are a number of ways you can insulate your windows to prevent heat loss. Try covering the window with plastic sheeting, taping it in place with masking tape to prevent damaging your walls.
Another option for window insulation is bubble wrap, though this does impede visibility. If you don't mind losing visibility completely, you can also use Styrofoam sheets cut down to fit your window and held in place with masking tape.
Fake your own double-glazing
If you can't afford double-glazed windows, but want to improve your energy efficiency, purchase a kit from your local hardware store. These kits contain a special plastic film that can be applied to your windows to reduce the amount of heat lost.
While these measures will help, you may want to consider replacing your windows with newer, more energy efficient ones. It may cost more initially, but the savings you'll see on your heating bill make it more than worth it.
