Window Washing Tips for Streak-Free Windows
If you've got good-looking windows, you'll want to show them off, but not if they're streaky and smudged. Window cleaning may not be the most fun chore, but it doesn't have to be a frustrating one. Just use these tips for streak-free windows, and you'll have sparkling results in no time.
Use a squeegee
Skip the elbow grease, and go with the tool that professional window cleaners have been using to make their job easier for years, the humble squeegee. Buy one with a good, sharp rubber blade for less smudging and no streaks. Look for a squeegee that is made of metal (it will last longer), and one that allows you to change the rubber blade.
Replace the blade of the squeegee as it begins to look worn, or when it starts leaving streaks on your window pane. You can also try reversing the blade to get a little extra mileage out of it, as long as it isn't split or cracked.
Use dishwashing soap
You don't need any fancy window cleaners to get streak-free glass, just use a little bit of dishwashing soap in a bucket of clean water. Mix the soap and water with a sponge to get a nice, soapy solution. Use a sponge to wipe the soapy water onto the windows and loosen any residue, then use the squeegee to swipe away the suds.
Use the right technique
When using your squeegee, be sure to start from the top, swiping horizontally as you go. Between swipes, wipe the edge of the squeegee on a clean towel to remove any dirt or debris. Continue working downward, until you've cleaned the entire window. Finish off by wiping and wet spots dry with a clean, soft microfiber cloth.
Stay out of the sun
Avoid cleaning the windows on hot or sunny days. The sun can cause the windows to dry as you are cleaning, causing spots or streaks. Instead, choose a day that's slightly overcast or when the sun is not shining directly onto the windows.
