Pick a cloudy day
Washing your windows on an overcast day helps to prevent them from drying too quickly and leaving unsightly streaks. This is true no matter which method you use to wash your windows.
Check for cracks first
Before you break out the soap and water, do a visual inspection of your windows to make sure that there are no cracks in the glass or the caulking around the window frame. You need a good, tight seal to keep water from penetrating inside your home. Make any necessary repairs well in advance of cleaning your windows.
Use the right soap
Be sure to buy soap that’s made for use with pressure washers. Look for a general purpose one that is safe to use on windows, siding, and doors.
Take it easy
Most pressure washers have adjustable settings that range from a pinprick, forceful stream to a gentle spray. To wash your windows, you want a setting that’s fairly gentle when you apply your soapy water.
Approach at an angle
Spray your windows and frames from an angle, starting off to one side when you spray. This is more effective at lifting dirt and loose paint than spraying directly head-on. It will also let you make sure your pressure isn’t too high. Pressure that’s too high can damage your windows and even break the glass in some cases.
Turn up the pressure when you rinse
Adjust the pressure up just a little when you rinse the soap away. This will help lift off dirt loosened by the soap and clear away the grime. Rinse the windows thoroughly, then dry them completely before attempting to do any paint touch-ups or other repairs.
