How to Remove the Left-Over Goo From Your Christmas Decorations from Your Windows
Christmas may be long gone, but if the ghost of Christmas decorations past still lingers on your windows, you may be at your wits end trying to get them cleaned up for the New Year. Fortunately, there are some simple solutions to remove stubborn ‘goo’ left behind from adhesives on your holiday decorations. Here’s what you need to know to get your Halifax windows sparkling again.
Scrape it away
If your ‘goo’ is sticky (like from adhesive strips or tape), start by using a straight edge razor and gently scraping the built up goo away. You may need to change the blade out several times if there is a great deal of buildup because a dull blade won’t scrape as well. Finish off by wiping the window with a damp cloth.
Spray away the stickiness
If there is still a sticky residue, use a commercial window cleaner designed to remove adhesives. Some household cleaners may work, too. Follow the instructions on the bottle, repeating as necessary if any residue remains after the initial cleanup.
If these don’t work, you may need to make a trip to the hardware store for a special cleaner designed to remove stubborn adhesive residue. Most of these are no harsher than regular cleaners, but they are formulated to breakup the adhesive to make it easier to remove. Some use citrus oils and even leave behind a pleasant scent, which is a nice bonus.
Try other methods
If you don’t have any window cleaner, you can also try using rubbing alcohol or vinegar. Both of these may soften and loosen the goo enough so that you can scrape it away with your razor or a credit card.
If all else fails
If nothing else seems to work, you can resort to using lacquer thinner on the adhesive, but use this sparingly and in a well-ventilated area. Also use gloves--this isn’t a job you want to do without taking safety precautions.
