Spring Home Maintenance Tips
Spring is the perfect time to spruce up your home and tackle any maintenance projects that need to be done. After a long, cold winter, you’ll want to make sure your home is ready for the warm weather ahead, so use these spring home maintenance tips to get your home in ship-shape.
Roof
Winter can be hard on your roof, so give it a good inspection to make sure you haven’t sustained any damage from ice and snow during the winter. It’s probably a good idea to have your roof inspected by a professional if you have any suspicions that there’s a problem, but don’t try to tackle it yourself, unless you happen to be a roofer.
Windows
Changes in temperature can cause your windows to contract and expand, damaging the seal around them. If you find any cracks or holes in the seal around your window, fix them with sealant before it gets too hot. Those cracks will make cooling your home more difficult, and they will make your home more costly to keep cool.
Decks and patios
Look for warped or broken boards on your deck, and watch for broken paving stones. These need to be replaced before you spend too much time out in the garden, because they are trip hazards.
If you have a wooden deck, now is a good time to reseal it. A new coat of sealant will help protect the wood during the summer and through the damp winter ahead.
Plumbing
During the winter, pipes can freeze and crack, causing leaks inside and outside your home. Check your pipes for any signs of a leak or crack, and repair or replace them as necessary.
If you had flooding during the winter due to a burst pipe, check the area for signs of damage to the walls and floor. Cracked or peeling plaster should be repaired and pay attention for signs of mold, which must be treated by a professional.
Air conditioning
Don’t wait until the temperatures soar before checking out your AC system. It’s better to maintain and repair it in the spring, before you need it, than to find yourself sweltering without it during the busy summer season.
